Since 1994, with the support of the national and provincial projects of science and technology, the researchers of this project have applied the principles of system engineering and dynamic model construction technology to quantitative analysis and digital characterization of the crop growth and management systems in wheat and rice. Based on the analysis and refinery of huge amount of experimental data, a crop growth model with a function of dynamic prediction and a crop growth knowledge model with a function of precise designing were created. Further integrated spatial information technology, a model-based crop management system which realized digitalization of crop growth and productivity and precision of crop management designing was proposed to provide generally adaptive decision-making support for precision cultivation and digitalized farming.

The major technological innovations in this program can be illustrated as follows: the researcher have 1) created a physiological-ecological-process-based digital visualization simulation model of crop growth and productivity formation for dynamic prediction of crop growth under different conditions; 2) created a knowledge model of crop management based on relationships between environment, crop varieties and technology for precise designing of crop production management; 3) first proposed a decision-making support system of crop management based on coupling of the crop growth model and the knowledge model for precise designing, dynamic prediction and digitalized regulation of the whole process of crop growth and management; 4) taken in the lead in establishing patterns of technological principles and application in digitalized farming which has promoted development in precision cultivation and digitalized farming.

The academic achievements in the present research program are that the researchers have published over 200 papers and 3 monographs, have received 25 national property rights for software designing, and have trained 45 graduate and doctorate candidates. These achievements have greatly enhanced connotative innovation in crop informatics and crop cultivation science and talent training, promoted rapid development of digitalized agriculture and technological updating of agricultural industry, and have received close attention and good evaluation from global research society.

The economic and social benefits derived from this research are: the technology developed here has been demonstrated and extensively applied in the whole area of Jiangsu Province and other areas like Anhui, Zhejiang, Henan, Shandong and Hebei Provinces, resulting in evident yield and cost reduction (generally 5% to 15% yield increase and 10% to 20% reduction in nitrogen use), in significantly raising the levels of designing, predicting and regulating crop growth and production systems which have promoted informatization and modernization of agricultural industry management, producing great social and economic effect (extension of the technology to 29.907 million mu of farmland in the country with increase in economic benefit of 1.1076 billion RMB for farmers), promising a good future of application.
