Brief Introduction:


  This project is led by Nanjing Agricultural University and in collaboration with North West Agriculture and Forestry University, Shandong Agricultural University and five other universities, the Feed Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Institute of Subtropical Agricultural Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and three other institutes, and nine leading enterprises. The project also relies on some national and provincial industrial technology systems, important teams of research and development of breed advantages of goats.

  The aims  of the present research are to solve: (1) the problems of extensive breeding environment and low standardization breeding level of meat goats, focusing on large-scale intensive mutton breeding facilities and environmental system engineering, the models suitable for different scales and breeding methods, and technical regulations for the resources of feces and sick goats; (2) the problems of low survival rate and slow growth of lamb, focusing on diet parameters and target growth control techniques of lambs, feed preparation and feeding procedures at different growth stages; (3) the problems of "livestock and human competition for grain" and low utilization efficiency of agricultural and sideline products, focusing on the technology of transforming crop straw to feed, large-scale production systems for feed resources, and TMR breeding technology. (4) the problem of disease prevention and weak techniques of diagnosis and treatment of goat, focusing on developing a rapid detection kit for disease, and promoting comprehensive prevention and treatment for goat diseases from such aspects as monitoring, prevention and treatment; (5) the issue of extensive management of breeding in the western region of the country, based on "breed-raising-management-disease control", and integration, demonstration and extension of ecological goat farming technology; 6) the problem of low breeding efficiency in the eastern region of the country with high scale breeding, focusing on the breeding technique of lambs, the high efficient utilization technology of feed and the standardized feeding management, integration, demonstration and extension of the key technologies for efficient and safe breeding of goats.

  The expected accomplishments and benefits of the project will be to help to improve the quantity and quality of mutton goats, and to establish 10-15 demonstration farms, raising 1-2 million goats with a mortality rate reduce by more than 15%, the productivity increased by 5%-10%, the emissions of conventional pollutants decreased by more than 60%, and the resource rate of fecal and dead animals reaching 80%. The demonstration will extend its positive influence on more than 200,000 goats, and the technology will indirectly benefit 2.5 million goats, equal to 15% of the all the goats in the areas covered by the project, with the fattening goats in the demonstration farm gaining weight by 200 g/day, producing an economic benefit of over 2.5 billion RMB in total.
